Perhaps the other unmentioned aspect of the inane statement “there are too many guitar pedals” is that guitar pedals are relatively cheap. Sure, there are outliers (especially the secondary market examples you mention), but it’s well within the reach of most musicians to acquire a modest collection over the course of their lives.

A kid who starts with an Amazon Tubescreamer clone that costs $24 (or whatever they are, I bought one and don’t remember) could easily have a bin full of pedals by the time they’re in their twenties. I know because I did the same thing, albeit with a DS-1 in 1997. I never thought “oh I don’t need another pedal” per se, but mostly “I want to try something new”. Chasing the dragon.

At this point, I honestly don’t know how many pedals I have… and I’m almost scared to find out.

Of course, no one plays “all their pedals”. You switch them in or out depending on what you’re after.

In Grant Peterson’s photography book, Instrument, Ian MacKaye talks about how in Fugazi, he never used pedals because he wanted to be empowered by his limitations. E.g. creativity being sparked by a lack of options (cue “Freedom of Choice”).

My version of this (and I know I’m not alone) is to pick pedals for a music project or band and then stick to those pedals. I’ll even go as far as building a board (out of wood) for a specific set of pedals and zip-tieing them into place. Those are then my sounds for X.

I love having new pieces to slip in for a new endeavor as well as rediscovering old favorites. There’s always something new and interesting out there even if I’d be just as happy going back to my DS-1…

Aside: is the Pilot G-2 the DS-1 of the pen world? I’ve bought a lot of pens, but I keep coming back…

I really enjoy the reading! It is incredible how a passion for some thing might make you evolve! From the JHS show telling Josh's history and reading this now I can imagine how his mind had to evolve to be as big as he is. Very inspiring! Thanks for that.
